Couples for Christ - which not only caters for married couples; but also for children (Kids for Christ), teenagers (Youth for Christ), singles (Singles for Christ), unmarried or widowed women (Handmaidens of the Lord) and unmarried men or widowers (Servants of the Lord); has been running in 2 households (small cell groups) in our Parish for 8 months. It has been a time of great spiritual growth, and an opportunity to meet and make friends with like minded Catholics from our Parish as well as neighbouring Parishes.

John Snook writes:

Couples for Christ in Durban hosted a Eucharistic Congress at Glenmore Centre in conjunction with the Archdiocese of Durban from 25-27 April.  The Conference was convened by His Eminence Wilfred Cardinal Napier, Archbishop of Durban and attended by about 250 members from Africa, Canada, Middle East, Europe and the Philippines.  Bishop Giorgio Bertin from Djibouti concelebrated a Sunday Mass at our Parish and spoke on the Church in a Muslim country.

Here in Pinetown we held a General Assembly on 16th May attended by 180 members of CFC from our own parish and other parishes in the Archdiocese of Durban.  The meeting was held in the piazza and the praise and worship and homily by Father Grant Emmanuel was greatly enjoyed by those present.
A Christian Life Programme will be held in our Parish Hall from Friday 11th to Sunday 13th July, this is a wonderful opportunity for  us to renew our commitment to family life, become involved in praise, worship and the evangelization of our faith. If you were involved in Renew, Alpha or any of the other Small Group Programmes; this is a must, as it fills the gap between Sunday Mass and home prayer.

In the interim, the 2 households are undergoing training to facilitate the upcoming Christian Life Programme (CLP).

The Sewing Group - An SVDP Project
Written by Caroline Dube
Wednesday, 16 July 2008

As reported in the March Newsletter; this project started in conjunction with the Garden Project. The thinking was: that by teaching self-improvement skills, these people may earn their way in their community, rather than relying on continual handouts and food parcels.

In October 2006, 9 adult ladies, (some from our own Zulu Mass community  and some from the Nazareth Community), underwent a 6 month sewing course. This was funded mainly by Fr Justin’s Project Fund, with the SVDP meeting the weekly transport costs. It was during the course, that a parishioner, (and representative from the Frame Group), Ronnie Jafta, donated tracksuiting and t-shirt fabric to enable the Group to make a start. (Thank You, Mr Jafta). At this point, the Group had no secure venue to continue with this venture. The intention was that once the Group was up and running, they in turn, could pass their knowledge onto others, who were not able to attend the Sewing Course. Thanks to Fr Justin, the suggested Wendy House was erected in the shadow of the church.

While the new office construction was in progress, the builders made use of the Wendy House, as a change room. There was still no electricity or tables. Thanks to the kindness of the parishioners, the room received the... necessary bits and pieces to make the Wendy House a viable working environment.

And so it was, that those
involved in this project were rewarded for their patience. Anyone who has Sewing skills and would like to share their knowledge are invited to talk to one of the SVDP members.

June Youth Pastoral Worker Report

The teens sign their solidarity with our pilgrims to World Youth Day.

In the 4 years that I have served as the Pastoral Worker to the Youth of our parish, I have frequently asked myself “Why me, God?” As so many of us do, I have questioned whether or not I am the right person to fulfill this role that God has given me. One of the main reasons that comes to mind is whether or not I have the knowledge required to be a leader to the future of our church. In my search to finding the answer, God has spoken to me through the Teens.

Life Teen began one year ago (July 2007) and has been a turning point in the Youth Ministry of our Parish. The discussion sessions have been an opportunity for the Core Team to get a glimpse into the lives of the Teens of today, and so very often, reveal to us Teens that are strong in their faith, who are searching for answers that will lead them into a closer relationship with God, and who are willing to get involved in their parish. From these Teens I have learned important lessons about the effects of Love on the lonely, the effects of Acceptance on the outcast, and the effects of Prayer on the needful. They have taught me that knowledge is not what necessarily makes the difference, but rather the strength of my faith in God and the power of the Holy Spirit.
“For since in the wisdom of God the world did not come to know God through wisdom, it was the will of God through the foolishness of the proclamation
to save those who have faith”
1 Corinthians, 1: 21.

The most important lesson I have learned of all, is that we as teachers, leaders, parents, adults, etc. spend a lot of time trying to impart our knowledge onto the young and youthful and often times forget that, more vital than teaching them what to do, is LISTENING (not with our ears, but with our hearts) to what they have to say.

A message to our Teens:

Faith is more than attending Mass and Catechism classes. We need to live our faith and act upon it – “So also faith of itself, if it does not have works, is dead.” James 2: 17. In the words of your own peers:

“The youth Fiesta day hosted at St Anthony's parish in Durban, was well organised and run. It was just a disappointment that only few people from our parish attended. But the one's who did, were very informed & came back with positive knowledge and understanding of their chosen sessions.” Maunda Sibiya.

“hey all I attended the youth fiesta on Sunday it was a really awesome experience. (I was) really sorry that there were only so few from our church. I would really like to encourage more people to attend things that happen with in our youth. God bless.” Janine York.
